Damian arranged to meet David for dinner. He needed to talk to him…seriously!
“Ah yes Mr Pashley, I have your booking right here. If you’d like to follow me I will show you to your table” says the host.
Damian takes a seat at the table in the corner of the Sunny Side Up diner, and waits for David to arrive.
“I’m famished” David says as he sits down after greeting Damian “What do you feel like to eat?”
“Not much” Damian replies. “I’m really not hungry at all. I need to talk to you David”.
“Yeah ok, time for that in a minute. Let’s order first” David says as he calls the waitress over.
“I’ll have pepperoni pizza thanks” David tells the waitress.
Damian grabs the menu and quickly scans it “I’ll just grab a BLT sandwich thank you”.
“Any drinks fella’s?” the waitress asks
“Not right now thanks” Damian tells her.
“Ok, we’ll bring that out as soon as it’s ready. Shouldn’t be long” the waitress almost sings in a happy voice.
“So what’s up?” David asks Damian, happy now that he has ordered.
“It’s Ashley. She’s not well at all and I don’t know what to do” Damian tells him.
“Well you’re a Dr, you should know. What’s the problem? What’s wrong with her?” David asks.
“It’s not confirmed yet I have to take her to see a specialist but it’s serious. I just know it is” The waitress interrupts the conversation as she delivers their food. Damian goes on to tell David about Ashley’s weird behaviour and forgetfulness. “I will see what the specialist says but if it’s what I’m thinking, it’s not good. It may mean me spending a lot of time looking after her and I fear that it will make our relationship suffer. I won’t be able to see you very often” Damian tells David somberly.
“Oh come here you” David says standing up from the table. He gives Damian a hug “It’s ok, we’ll be fine. I’m not going anywhere. I’ll wait for you and I am always here for you. If you need anything, anything at all, I am here for you. It will all work out fine in the end, you’ll see”.
“Thank you David, that means so much and puts my mind at rest” Damian tells him.
The pair finish their meals and enjoy each others company. It may be the last time they can get together like this for a while.
Damian and Ashley arrive at the medical centre for their appointment with the specialist. There is a man on the phone talking to a technician of some kind and making an appointment. He hangs up the phone and looks up at Damian.
“Ashley Pashley. She’s here to see a Dr King” Damian tells him.
“Oh that’s me” the man tells him. “Sorry, one of our x-ray machines broke down and I’ve been trying to fix it but it’s beyond me. Just give me a second to get changed out of these work clothes and I’ll be with you”.
Dr King has been studying Ashley’s file, so he immediately gets Ashley to sit on the side of the bed.
“Ok, let me have a look here and see what we have” he says. He gives Ashley a quick check over noticing her lack of attention and memory as he talks to her.
“Ok, so the first thing we need to do is an MRI scan of your whole body” he tells Ashley.
Ashley looks at him horrified “A what?” she asks him.
“An MRI scan, so that we can see what is going on inside of you. Don’t worry it won’t hurt a bit” Dr King assures her.
“Ohhhhh, I don’t think I can do this” Ashley says as she puts her hands to her head, shaking it from side to side. Damian stands up from the chair he was sitting in
“Ashley hunny, it’s ok. Like the Doc said, it won’t hurt. I do these scans all the time. You just have to stand in the machine and let it do it’s thing. It’s the only way we will find out what is happening” he assures her.
The Dr winks at Damian as a way of saying thanks for the help.
“Ohh ok” Ashley agrees “Just hurry up before I change my mind”
Dr King takes Ashley to the scan room. Damian stays behind but tells the Doc to call if he needs him.
Dr King tells the receptionist on his way past “I’ll be in Scan room 2 if anyone needs me”.
“Ok Dr” the receptionist responds.
The pair enter the room and Ashley stops dead as she sees the machine in front of her. It’s large and daunting. She gulps.
“It’s ok Ashley” the Dr assures her “it really won’t hurt you”.
“Now I just need to turn it on and get it calibrated” he says more to himself than anyone else. They stand for a few minutes as the machine warms up.
“Ok, that should just about do it” Dr King says as the machine finished. “Ok Ashley, go ahead and step in and we’ll get this scan done super fast for you”.
Ashley steps inside the machine and the scanner begins to work it’s way up and down her body, scanning her from top to toe. Dr King especially pays attention to the brain area and does a few extra scans there.
“Ok Ashley, all done. You can step out now” he says.
Ashley steps out of the machine and immediately starts yelling at the Dr. “You said it wouldn’t hurt but it did. I felt that thing going up and down my body. It hurt my head” she yells at him.
Dr King is taken aback unprepared for her attack.
“I…I…I’m sorry Ashley. It doesn’t usually hurt. Are you ok? Would you like to sit down for a minute?” he asks.
“NO!” Ashley yells back.
Dr King takes Ashley back to the room. She grabs a glass of water from the sink while he sits at his desk and jots down some notes.
“So what do you think Doc?” Damian asks.
“I have looked at the scans and there is a dark spot on Ashley’s brain” the doctor tells Damian in a quiet voice.
Ashley suddenly feels exhausted so she lays down on the bed. The Dr continues talking to Damian “I fear it is a tumour Damian as we suspected”
Damian sucks in his bottom lip and bites it hard. He knew this was what the outcome would be. “What do you think Doc, what are her chances?”
“You know being a Dr as well, that I can’t answer that right now Damian. We will need to do a biopsy and further scans”.
“I know, I know” Damian responds “but in your opinion, what do you honestly think? Dr to Dr…”
Dr King sighs heavily “With the rapid onset of symptoms and the rapid deterioration, I believe it would be a Grade 4 malignant tumour. BUT I could be wrong” he tries to assure Damian.
“No, I think you’re right Doc” Damian agrees sadly.
A grade 4 malignant tumour is rapid growing, invasive and life threatening. He knows the chances of his wife’s survival are very slim and he knows her time is short. How will he tell the children????
